The organizations experienced transoceanic mergers in 2010, bringing about name changes for both. As Henry Miller Commands, Part 3 Dont Be Nervous

AS HENRY MILLER COMMANDS, PART three: DON’T BE NERVOUS I’m simply going to maintain going with this sequence of posts impressed by Henry Miller’s Eleven Commandments of Writing. If you haven’t been with me from the start, or want a second (or third) look at the full listing of commandments, you can click back to the first publish right here. This week, we get to the third of 11 commandments, in which we're cautioned . . . 3. Don’t be nervous. Work calmly, joyously, recklessly on no matter is in hand. I’ve covered this before, in numerous types. In particular, I exhorted you to Write in Ecstasy, Edit With Intent, and to joyously, recklessly strategy each new novel project as a short, dangerous e-book. But I don’t assume I’ve ever addressed this idea of being “nervous.” Writing a e-book could be scary proposition, which is what Dani Shapiro was hoping to help us with when, in her book Still Writing, she described this idea of starting out with the objective of writing a brief, unhealthy book. It takes a few of that nervousness away. Building on that could be a idea yow will discover in all kinds of pursuits, and that’s breaking an enormous project up into smaller pieces, each less intimidating than the whole, and stressing these smaller, shorter-time period targets over the larger, long term whole they’ll ultimately make up. It’s just about the heart of Agile and Scrum project management, breaking down massive software program projects into “tales.” Self-assist guru Tony Robbins refers to it as “chunking”â€"breaking down huge duties into smaller, much less intimidating chunks. You don’t have to write the guide right now, simply Chapter 1, or any thousand phrases, or no matter sized “chunk” works for you. Then you tackle the following chunk. And as I’ve said earlier than, you don’t even have to write those chunks so as. When one chunk is “done” in tough kind (don’t fear about pesky particulars like spelling, grammar, manuscript format, high quality . . .) transfer on to the subsequent brief, unhealthy chunk. Keep doing that, one chunk at a time, till you get the entire story advisedâ€"in it’s tough kind. With that rough draft in hand, you'll be able to then start revising, more slowly, extra fastidiouslyâ€"but you can’t edit text that doesn’t exist. First, get it down on paper (or, y’know, in your computer . . . you know what I mean). That concept of breaking massive duties into a sequence of smaller tasks has al l the time helped me overcome the nervousness of going through down the daunting task of a ninety,000 word novel. It could be a good reason to stipulate, for you nervous “pantsers” out there. An outline can help you delineate the “chunks.” But the act of writingâ€"typing, writing by hand, dictating, and so forth.â€"the precise phrases may not be what’s making you nervous. It isn’t always what makes me nervous. I keep having hassle making progress on what’s become type of a perpetual work-in-progress because I’m nervous concerning the story itself. I have doubts. Is there any motion in it? Is my huge shock ending simply awful? It may be really predictable, and it'd feel like a cheat. I’ve written a part of that ending already and I prefer it . . . ish. It appears to work, however then there’s no approach to know for sure until I’ve written the large story that leads into it. I’m also nervous that the whole thought is too passive, that it places my hero on an u nimaginable quest he isn’t truly geared up to do, and some earlier version of the define did have him being more or less pushed along by other characters, which does are inclined to make for a disappointing hero . . . But then I saw that and had some interesting ideas to minimize it, to make him extra active. That’s a good factor, proper? But now I’m nervous about that. What else is mistaken with this idea that I simply haven’t observed but? I’m nervous as hell, really, and that may clarify why I’ve been spending extra writing time on little flash fiction items and poems than this novel. But as nervous as I am about specifics, as often as I’ve written some version of an overview, I actually think I actually have this guide in my head. I have the temper of it. I have a way around the passive hero illness. I assume the ending will work, and never as a result of it’s some kind of gimmicky M. Night Shyamalan thing, but because it’s the best emotional shut point and has one thing to say. So what’s wrong? Now I assume maybe I simply have residual nervousnessâ€"some sort of submit-nervous stress disorder. Maybe that is why Henry Miller drank. Alcoholism is about the last thing I want in my life proper now, thanks, so how do we do that sober? How about I do the identical thing I advise authors I work with to do. After all, I actually have been difficult myself to take my very own recommendation, to try my very own workout routines. What I’d tell an author I’m working with as an editor is: Just write it. Maybe it's going to suck. But that’s what Dani Shapiro was saying, too, and Ray Bradbury, and Robert A. Heinlein, and now (or actually earlier than any of the others) Henry Miller. They’re saying, and so am I: Write the rattling factor. If the hero is still passive when I’m done with the rough draft I’ll revise him to be extra lively. If within the tough draft the ending lands with a thud I’ll revise it so it ends with a bang. I’m not reside-broadcasting here. I don’t have to point out the factor to anybody until I’m pleased with it. Once I get going I know I can write joyously, especially by hand in certainly one of my trusty cheapass notebooks. I wrote a number of scenes of that novel already and it was joyous. I was calm. I didn’t care if any particular word was spelled incorrect. I recklessly wrote scenes means out of order and only items of chapters. And that’s me writing. The nervousness only occurs when I’m not writing, once I let different tasks and just different things in life intrude on my precious writing time. Maybe “nervousness” is an excuse for not making time to work on the factor. Hell, I feel better already. And taking another take a look at the remainder of Henry Miller’s c ommandments, they all seem to hold on this one thought: Write the rattling thing. This thing. Now. For my revised listing of commandments, I’m going to fall again on this: 3. Write in ecstasy, edit with intent. I suppose that about covers it. â€"Philip Athans About Philip Athans I usually discuss with the concept of “giving myself permission to write down it incorrect”. The belief that we have to “do it right” can be quite pervasive. There is also the obstacle of “too many ideas”, when the mind spins numerous potentialities, and we now have to choose one, the “best” one; though in some ways that’s one other version of the same drawback. As you say, the answer is to put in writing. I find that the very act of placing phrases down on paper, or computer screen, helps to get them out of my head. Now I don’t have to worry about forgetting them, or losing them; they’re safely on the page. And I actually really feel like that’s where we’re lucky. I can fill up a textual content file with hundreds of phrases, all of the inane ramblings of my imagination, and it takes up hardly any house on a computer onerous drive.

Are you the Office Gossip

Are you the Office Gossip Have you at any point had a working environment that was totally tattle free? Definitely, right, obviously not. Tattle is by all accounts an unavoidable result of socially interconnected individuals talking among themselves. In the broadest of terms, tattle is characterized as anything said about an individual when they aren't anywhere near. The most notorious (and, shockingly, normal) type of tattle is malevolent. This isn't generally the situation however; once in a while tattle can be a positive power. It isn't in every case simple to realize exactly how to react to chatter. The main guideline of the grapevine is to address everything. There might be a part of truth to most babble, however things can undoubtedly turn crazy and become ravaged. It's a smart thought to affirm that what you've heard is valid before you pass it on (or, if all else fails DONT SAY ANYTHING). This precautionary measure will help keep your notoriety in great respects. Keep in mind, however, that tattle will in general stream around and change starting with one telling then onto the next (did you play that game when you were a child? Sit around, murmur something in someones ear, hang tight for it to return to you, at that point perceive how unique it became?). This twisting impact can make tattle hard to depend on. There are times when you may need to effectively draw in tattle to get the message out about your prosperity on an ongoing task, for instance. Despite the fact that tattle can be a quick specialized technique, you ought to consistently (even with positive tattle) continue with alert. No one can really tell what subtleties may be included or evacuated. Cease from spreading the most recent goody on the off chance that you have any questions over it. In case you're office is enduring under the standard of a tattle sovereign (or ruler), the best arrangement is to just defy this individual. Try not to be savage or mean, rather furnish them with an ear, amusingly, to which they can say what's really troubling them. Most of tattle is tied in with getting consideration and, frequently, there's a more profound issue at the core of things. Ask your occupant tattle what's truly going on and, ideally, you'll get a legitimate reaction. In any case, it merits referencing to them the pressure their shenanigans are putting on you and the workplace. In the event that conditions don't improve, consider telling somebody higher up. Know however that this news isn't probably going to go from other people excessively well. Ensure, at that point, that in the event that you decide to betray the tattle, you have the right source and the bits of gossip are really abusive. In like manner, in case you're wanting to submit a general direction to Machiavelli and manufacture your own tattle seat so as to excel, recall that following the wellspring of everything in a littler situation (like an office) can be quite simple. Whenever discovered, not exclusively will your colleagues feel sold out and hateful, there could be not kidding legitimate repercussions. Maligning claims might be introduced to any individual who diffuses lies about an individual verbally, transcriptually, or on the web. With a little exertion, you can likewise maintain a strategic distance from the whole carnival by and large. To limit the measure of tattle you're presented to, have a go at tuning in to music at your work area (at a non-problematic volume low enough for you to in any case hear the telephone ring). You may likewise need to have a go at halting the couple of bits of gossip you do hear. In the event that somebody says something off the mark about a collaborator, straightforwardly question it and express concern. Recall that there is a differentiation between all the negative tattle and the general social domain of the workplace; evading the previous shouldn't mean barring yourself from the last mentioned. Furthermore, nothing closes down a mean gossiper snappier than a pleasant individual. Be the pleasant individual. You will consistently excel.

Forecast for 2009 and what it means to you

Forecast for 2009 and what it means to you Guest post by Gord Orlikow, Senior Client Partner, Korn/Ferry International. The economic fallout from 2008 has left even the most prescient analysts slack-jawed, given the direction, speed and magnitude of market change. Weve heard the bad news the job market will stay its dismal course in the first quarter and not improve until the end of the year or early 2010. Recent numbers are certainly bleak Canada lost 64,000 jobs in December. The US was hit even harder; more than 2 million jobs were lost in 2008, with as many as 600,000 job losses in December alone. For those of us still tempted to predict the coming years fortunes, we do so only with the greatest humility. If you are in transition or contemplating a job change, it is all too easy to be paralyzed by stories of Armageddon playing out in the media when, in reality, little has changed by way of what is recognized as an effective job search strategy. While the overall environment is unquestionably challenging, some sectors have and will likely continue to outperform. In no particular order; Technology: Leading organizations recognize the value of maintaining a long-term technology advantage as a shortage of talent still exists in this field after so many left eight years ago, following the tech crash. Green Technology and Clean Tech: While still an emerging sector and subject to large swings, we anticipate the evolution and development of environmentally friendly technologies to drive demand for talent in this industry. Professionals with alternative and/or renewable energy (wind, solar, hydro) experience will be especially sought after in the near-term. Those with transferable skills from other sectors will find opportunities if they approach the sector strategically especially those who have a technical regulatory background or who can grow the top line. Telecom: With last years sale of additional wireless spectrum and the entry of new players into the industry, we should see additional demand for those who can build out and manage the additional network and all those roles associated with sales, customer service and administration to run the business. Healthcare: An aging population and an overall shortage of skilled professionals suggest the healthcare sector will likely outperform the broad market. We expect to see continued demand in nursing at all levels; home health executives and professionals, and allied health professionals. Advertising, Marketing and Public Relations: As the social media space continues to gain momentum, web advertising solutions, communities and networking sites could well drive jobs and be the center of attention in 2009. Financial services: We expect to see hiring for turnaround executives, restructuring officers, distressed asset managers, compliance and regulatory professionals. Investment banking will remain quiet until that community creatively invents a new round of financial instruments to sell to the rest of us though probably under a stronger regulatory environment. More importantly in the near term, talent so inefficiently sucked into that sector in the last ten years will exit in large numbers, competing for other technically oriented roles as they are more productively redeployed outside of financial services. Sectors aside, the ongoing demands of the market do not stand still. Involuntary turnover will increase (restructuring) and involuntary turnover will slow (fewer perceived opportunities and individuals unable to afford retirement). In general, companies still need to replace those who retire or leave for other reasons and they have to hire people to address specific projects. The nature of the employment arrangement might change smaller companies in particular might hire a candidate on a term or contract, tiding the individual over a rough financial stretch which can turn into a full-time job down the road. Plan your success: As always, a strategic, tenacious and active networking strategy is by far and away your best route to success. Given the current climate, a company terminating employees in one area will be enormously discreet if intending to hire into another area. Why network? If you are perceived as credible, your networking meeting evolves into a first interview where the conversation moves from a discussion about a business problem to a negotiation for a job designed around your skills (as opposed to you having to fit the recruiters narrow parameters), It is exceptionally difficult to change sectors without networking to learn the issues, vocabulary and culture of the new sector, With every meeting, you practice and hone your interview skills, Even after only a few meetings, you potentially are positioned as someone who brings best practice business skills with them, and You will meet those most influential in the sector including those in industry and in the services community serving that sector (such as recruiters specializing in the space). Good economy or bad, theres no shortcut to success. Intelligently knocking on more doors opens more opportunities. Make your plan. Work it with passion, tenacity and resolve. You will land in a good place no matter what is happening in the broader environment.

How I went cash only for a week and saved money

How I went money just for a week and set aside cash The main time I have money is the point at which I realize I'm heading off to some place that doesn't acknowledge card; seeing the feared sign 'money just' is trouble for some Londoners! Having money, particularly change, isn't just a bad dream as I'm in dread of losing it in the profundities of my purse or flat broke in my pants pocket, however it additionally appears to be moderate and untidy. For what reason would I pay with money and afterward sit tight for my change, when I can tap my card, and be finished? Despite the fact that there are clear masters to being money less, don't let me fool you, there are cons as well. We are on the whole blameworthy of purchasing that additional beverage at the bar basically in light of the fact that we can or flying into the shop in transit home to get pasta sauce and coming out with the whole store since it is presently simple and agony allowed to do as such. You don't need to confront the truth of what you've spent until you check your bank articulation later (on the off chance that you check it by any stretch of the imagination)! This steady trade drove me to spend route over my financial plan, so I concluded I would utilize just money for seven days to perceive how my ways of managing money would change. I set my card aside and began new Monday morning with £50 to last me the week. Monday: £50 During the normal day, I would purchase in any event two cups of espresso while all over town, yet not today! Instead, I did the conspicuous and had my caffeine fix before I went out and that was it for the afternoon. You'll be satisfied to discover that I adapted, and it was simple! Breaking into a £10 only for some espresso didn't appear to be justified, despite all the trouble; I turned out to be significantly more mindful of going through on the primary day just via conveying money. Monday's are the busiest day of the week for me, be that as it may, so I bought lunch which cost a fiver. Tuesday, cash left: £45 One irritating component I experienced with going money possibly was when going to pay in an eatery, it causes everything simpler on the off chance that you to can tell your server the amount you need to pay on your card and afterward basically tap. Yet, no, here I am checking my pennies attempting to locate the specific sum instead of standing by longer for my change to be given. Admittingly, it made me consider what I would eat as again I just had a specific measure of cash on me. I, hence, imparted a pizza to my companion and had a coke, burning through £10. Wednesday, cash left: £35 It is the center of the week and I had a mid-week droop. It's uncommon that I don't fly into the nearby shop on my path home to get something I likely shouldn't, the thing I find, however, is that I never leave with a certain something. As in many stores, they have the 'incredible worth' area, so I went in with basically £1 and that was sufficient to block my hankering. As opposed to spending the £5+ I typically would, giving myself a modest quantity of progress was the most ideal approach to set aside cash! Thursday, cash left: £34 Like the majority of us, the consistent allurement of internet shopping is continually approaching when you have a check card. Making the procedure simpler, online stores currently recall your subtleties and everything necessary is a single tick to purchase something. Going money just, be that as it may, prevented me from doing any web based shopping. In spite of the fact that partly it's badly arranged in the event that you frantically need a thing of attire, however on the off chance that you are just perusing and brought into deals, at that point to just have money is a boon. I didn't have to purchase anything, and as I wouldn't, I be able to spared a great deal! Friday, cash left: £34 Friday is likely the most troublesome day to just have money, as Friday night is definitely bar night! On a normal Friday, the merrier I get, the more joyful I am with tapping my card (and I always remember sacks of Mini Cheddars for the table) and would hence effectively burn through £20+. This week, be that as it may, I just took £10 money, which I knew would get me two glasses of house white wine. It is so natural to overspend, particularly on the off chance that you have an overdraft, yet going money just methods you can just spend what you truly have, instead of obtaining from the bank and getting paying off debtors. Saturday, cash left: £24 Alright envision, it's 11 pm, it's freezing, and I have to get a Uber home… yet no card implies no Uber! In spite of the fact that there is the alternative of a Black Cab, I needed more in my financial plan to burn through £20 on movement when I could top-up my clam with a fiver and still return home securely. Aside from this, I burned through £10 in Asda purchasing nourishment for supper. Sunday, cash left: £9 It's the week's end and I have £9 left. Not just have I spared so much that I wouldn't have on the off chance that I had been utilizing my card, yet I have cash remaining! On Sunday I spent nothing as I laid in bed the entire day watching Friends. By and large this experience was an enlivening to how not just having money is helpful in specific circumstances, yet in addition it has made me mindful that it is so natural to squander cash since cards are contactless. Figuring out how to set yourself financial plans and ensuring that you stick to them is significant and checking your record balance truly makes reality hit. Sick of your job These companies will pay you to quit

Tired of your activity These organizations will pay you to stop Tired of your activity These organizations will pay you to stop Those of us who fear work fantasize about getting up from our work area and exiting the entryway for good. In any case, this fantasy is held by money related real factors. We need that check. On the off chance that cash is what is keeping you down, in any case, more organizations are offering a leave bundle that will make it feasible for you to leave with money in hand.Online retailer Zappos is known for being a pioneer of this compensation to-stop pattern. At Zappos, fresh recruits are given what is known as The Offer, and is formally called the Graceful Leave Policy, CNN reports. In the event that recently recruited employees are understanding that they are not a solid match for Zappos' infamous religion of responsibility, they can quit and are given a month's compensation to leave inside a quarter of a year of beginning their activity. Amazon, which purchased Zappos in 2009, offers a comparative program, making it a yearly offer. On the off chance that you are troubled at Amazon, you can get presented to $5,000 to leave once a year. Why paying to stop is a decent culture moveIn work environments with hopeless representatives, you can envision this offer resembling a yearly cleanse of void work areas and freed laborers, however Amazon said just three workers have taken the offer so far this year. For those of us unused to this sort of offer, the quit motivating force may sound counterintuitive. Isn't the objective of selecting to get great laborers to stay? But the compensation to-stop offer shows that these organizations are organizing pledge to the activity over careless yield. They need representatives who really appreciate working there and are happy to pay cash to guarantee that solitary the most dedicated representatives remain. By making a simple leave an organization approach, it gives representatives the office to leave on their own terms and it gives supervisors the significant serenity to realize that failing to meet expectations or miserable workers can go separate ways without friction. This is a way of thinking that others lecture with the other sort of leave terminating. Sebastian Thrun, the prime supporter of Google X and President of Udacity, is so devoted to giving his representatives self-rule over their work that he calls his leave arrangement Project Freedom: the freedom of people from the weight of working under me. Instead of terminating representatives working for him that are not working out, he frees them by giving them another undertaking: to get another line of work. Their sole assignment at work becomes to get another line of work where they will be a superior fit.Jobs don't work out for a huge number of reasons, some more to do with social fit, some more to do with administrative confuses. At the end of the day it doesn't make a difference why the activity isn't working out, what makes a difference is guaranteeing that it simpler for the worker to make the following move to get to where they should be.

What FWP Are You Trying to Solve - Personal Branding Blog - Stand Out In Your Career Where FWP implies First World Problem. In the event that you arent unraveling a FWP you may be burning through your time. Of course, there are designers and pioneers out there making things you never realized you required. Think iPod (and before that the Sony Walkman). In any case, for the vast majority that are eager to go through their well deserved cash they need answers for First World Problems. Which means issues that sway them legitimately. There is a negative meaning of what a First World Problem is as well. Be that as it may, I'm taking the tack that a FWP is whatever somebody is eager to pay to acquire (or exchange, contingent on exchange factors). They don't should be tremendous issues. In any case, on the off chance that they are … that is OK. Some will be vainglorious: Giving a dependable sun powered electric board as a rooftop shingle (Elon Musk) Dispersing mosquito nets in regions that are overflowing with jungle fever (Bill Gates) Inflatable Powered Internet For Everyone (Google's Project Loon) Some will be simply utilitarian … and in being utilitarian they fathom a prompt FWP. Regardless of whether you believe that particular FWP being tended to is minor or non-existent there is a business opportunity for nearly everything. Who realized we required a self-wringing mop? Enter Joy Mangano … innovator of the Miracle Mop. In certain faculties you have to look no farther than the infomercials: Who doesnt need to cook an entire chicken in a fraction of the time with no muss and straightforward? Doesnt everybody need to balance 500 things in the space they used to balance 10 in their storeroom? Why wouldnt you need to get an entire body exercise in a short time? These are some of the time hilarious models, yet the truth of the matter is they work. What's more, they sell. What's more, these are by certain definitions ideal instances of First World Problems. Regardless of whether you will be the following property flipper or infomercial expert is up to you, yet the key is … Look for First World Problems to settle. At that point go out a settle them. At the point when you do you will hang out in your profession. You may even find that you have a couple of professions in you. What's more, in the expressions of Ralph Waldo Emerson … the world will beat a way to your entryway.

How Apprenticeship Employers Can Unlock the Potential of TikTok

How Apprenticeship Employers Can Unlock the Potential of TikTok TikTok has taken the social media world by storm. With Generation Z embracing the short-form video-sharing app in their millions, what does this mean for employers needing to reach teenagers? We used National Apprenticeship Week to investigate. TikTok: The new kid on the block It was the world’s second most downloaded app in 2019, second only to WhatsApp. It regularly topped the monthly app download charts with the video app achieving 1.5 billion downloads by the end of 2019. And 69% of TikTok’s users are between the age of 16 and 24: the all-important Generation Z. Why is it so popular? It’s a place of expression through the camera on your phone and some easy to use editing tools. And whatever the size of your following, you can reach hundreds, thousands, and even millions of people. The TikTok algorithm levels the playing field. What are consumer brands doing on TikTok? Consumer brands have a vested interest in reaching Generation Z. Their bottom lines depend on it. From the music and movie industries to celebrities and politicians, TikTok has opened up opportunities to drive explosive results and reach a highly valuable age group. Adobe has been doing a good job engaging users through their #MakeTheLeap challenge. With the help of influencers, they challenged people to show how they would make a leap in their life. This works well because it has strong messaging, it’s aspirational, it’s relatable, and it’s easy to join in. #MakeTheLeap has clocked up over 92 million views at the time of writing, which is great for Adobe’s brand awareness. It’s still early days for brands on TikTok but they are definitely seizing the opportunity to reach millions of people in a new way. What did we find on TikTok during National Apprenticeship Week? At Fanbytes, we work with brands to help them win the hearts of Gen Z on TikTok. That’s why we built our very own insights tool called Bytesights, the world’s first TikTok influencer discovery platform. We used National Apprenticeship Week to take a look at apprenticeship content. Hashtags are a big part of discovery on TikTok, so we took a look at #Apprenticeship and #NationalApprenticeshipWeek. The #Apprenticeship hashtag has 79 posts with around 40.9k views. However, there was a very low engagement with little to no likes or comments on most posts. Users are intrigued which is a great start but there’s room for active engagement. There wasn’t much happening with the #NationalApprenticeshipWeek hashtag with only 6 posts and 29.9k views. What was interesting, however, was that engagement was a lot higher with an average of 281 likes and 6 comments per post. This shows great potential. It was interesting to see how these hashtags performed during the week. There was clear interest in the topic as we saw an 18,980% increase in views on #NationalApprenticeshipWeek. Users became more engaged with the content as the week went on. People are willing to share apprenticeship life on TikTok but employers are yet to take advantage of its massive potential. Who has taken the leap into TikTok? ACCA. We worked with the Association of Chartered Certified Accounts to help them raise the profile of accountancy amongst Gen Z. TikTok offers something for everyone: the artist aspiring to turn into an overnight sensation, or an employer looking to strike a cord with Gen Z. TikTok has access to communities that are just waiting to be unlocked by employer marketers. Like a genie in a bottle, brands who become witness to its magic now will discover a whole new world. How can you get started on TikTok? Don’t worry, you don’t have to get your employees to start lip-syncing and dancing to music unless you want to. Here’s how you can get started: Download the app and spend your commute, sofa time or coffee breaks just consuming TikTok. The chances are you’ll have some ideas about how your organization could get involved. Reach Larger Audiences with Succinct and Thoughtful Communication - Personal Branding Blog - Stand Out In Your Career

Reach Larger Audiences with Succinct and Thoughtful Communication - Personal Branding Blog - Stand Out In Your Career Geometry tells us that a diagonal is the shortest path. Likewise, succinct communication with the end goal in mind is the shortest route for accomplishment. However, with communication it is necessary to be aware of balancing directness with diplomacy. Providing and Accepting Feedback Stomachs sometimes turn upon hearing very negative feedback. However, it is these times, when bracing yourself and paying attention to every detail, that will work to your benefit. While it may feel as if you are being stabbed in the back, the angrier you become usually implies there is an element of truth behind the commentary. Negative feedback may provide two important lessons: First, after you have calmed down, take time to examine all aspects of what was stated. Doing so sometimes provides the opportunity to recognize those elements of truth and realize incredible future results. Second, before you launch into advising what someone else “should do”, be certain you frame the comment in a thoughtful manner with the intent to truly help the other person. In this regard, your input will be appreciated. Example: Instead of berating a woman for her unprofessional photo, a complement was first paid to gain attention. She was told that she looks so much nicer in person than her online photo displays that she should consider having a professional headshot taken. The woman instantly recognized the complement, and appreciated the sage advice. She immediately made an appointment with a studio to have her photo taken. Rejection Is Sometimes A Good Thing Disappointment may sometimes be yours when turned down on a project. The reasoning seems illogical. Soon the thought of quitting may enter your mind as you begin to wonder if continuing is worth the effort. But just as with the negative feedback, ideas of new and better possibilities come to mind when you are willing to weigh in on the facts. Examples from an improved mindset: 1. Many times it turns out that the rejection was in fact a good turn of events as you land in a far better place. 2. Use examples of your story to motivate those you help because sooner or later most people face the same. Buyer versus Seller When it comes to the transaction of buying and selling there are two very distinct perceptions at hand. The idea of providing and receiving service with value included, are at the heart of making the sale. Examples: 1. As the buyer, confirm everything you expect from the purchase and details of what will happen should it not live up to what you were told. 2. Remind the buyer of all the good (value) that will come from the purchase, and that you will be there to guarantee the agreed upon expectations Reconnecting with Diplomacy A great way to reconnect with past prospects and clients, without seeming out of line is to say, “I was thinking of you”. Most everyone appreciates being thought of and then become more inclined to listen carefully. This is due to the belief you might be on to something special. Diplomacy builds the relationship. Operating in this manner with your clients and peers will positively distinguish your personal brand and lead you to the Smooth Sale!

Race Against the Machine

Race Against the Machine Technology is changing at such a rapid pace that some economists have predicted the “end of employment.” Computers are able to do many of the functions that humans used to perform, from security and crime fighting to journalism. (Many of the routine game summaries you read in the sports section are actually written by software called Narrative Science.) Technology is more reliable, more efficient and more accurate than any human, and after RD costs have been recouped, more cost effective as well. Is there any way to win the Race against the Machine? Embed from Getty Imageswindow.gie=window.gie||function(c){(gie.q=gie.q||[]).push(c)};gie(function(){gie.widgets.load({id:'QpjarqYmSjdTFV4omWFrsw',sig:'TAtVx1CwKQbZ3Y2Rzu7BYahpWatfcx7T1GoE_VYmrw4=',w:'507px',h:'338px',items:'152885764',caption: false ,tld:'com',is360: false })}); A 2012 paper by MIT Center for Digital Business researchers Erik Brynjolfsson and Andrew McAfee says that the stagnation of income and employment opportunities in the middle class is because “our skills and institutions have not kept up with the rapid changes in technology.” In previous technology revolutions, like those of the 19th and early 20th century, “millions of people left agriculture, but an even larger number found employment in manufacturing and services.” But the computer revolution is different; it’s moving faster and affecting almost every industry sector. “General purpose computers are directly relevant not only to the 60% of the labor force involved in information processing tasks but also to more and more of the remaining 40%.” When an entrepreneur built a factory in the 19th century, he created hundreds, perhaps thousands of jobs. The power of processing means that the new companies and products created today may need just a small group of people to reach markets all over the world. The number of jobs needed in the information economy is shrinking and dividing sharply.  Creators with digital expertise are thriving. Low end service jobs are also growing as creators need people to mow lawns, clean houses, and wait on tables. But the middle is disappearing rapidly. Brynjolfsson and McAfee say that we can reverse this trend if we shift our thinking. The key to winning the race, they write, is “not to compete against machines but to compete with machines.” Unlike natural resources, they argue, information resources â€" ideas â€" are not depleted with use; they actually multiply. They can be reused, re-purposed and reinvented, creating new iterations of products and services. They’re also available to anyone, anywhere, anytime via the internet. The authors write that we must improve our education system, focusing on creativity, leadership and communications skills and layering in competency-based certifications. In other words, we need to amplify the qualities that make us human and master the technology that will help us work alongside computers and robots. I foresee a day when we will all learn programming alongside reading, writing and math. When we encounter a problem that needs solving, we’ll write our own program. If it turns out to work, we’ll offer it for sale to others who have the same need. I agree with Brynjolfsson and McAfee when they say that we must take technology seriously as part of the slow recovery from the recent recession. “The root of our problems is not that we’re in a Great Recession, or a Great Stagnation, but rather that we are in the early throes of a Great Restructuring.” Financial crises force companies to innovate and cut costs wherever they can; today, that usually mean replacing human labor with technology. Even low wage workers are not immune to this sea change in employment. Taiwan’s Foxconn, the electronics company that produces Apple products and other technology, announced recently that it will purchase a million robots to replace much of its workforce in routine tasks like painting and assembly. In his book  A Farewell to Alms, economist Gregory Clark writes about a “worker” whose many jobs included agriculture, transportation and transporting troops into battle. The internal combustion engine replace him in every one of these functions. “There was always a wage at which all these horses could have remained employed. But that wage was so low that it did not pay for their feed.” We need to make sure that our next generation of workers do not become the horses of the 21st century.

How to Overcome Fear and Live a Rich Life

How to Overcome Fear and Live a Rich Life There’s an emotion that will hold you back from having the life you aspire to if you let it. It can prevent you from living a rich life filled with marvelous experiences, relationships and opportunities that bring you joy and help you become your best self. That emotion is fear. It’s normal to feel fear, especially when you’re about to do something new or put yourself out there in front of an audience. That’s just your brain protecting you from “bad things” happening, whether that’s failing or making a fool of yourself. When You Let Fear Stop You The easy way out is to give in to fear and stay in your comfort zone. But that keeps you from branching out, venturing forward and doing something new or different that leads to growing into your better self. And if you don’t move past your fear, it’ll hold you back and you’ll resent the fact that you’ve given into your fear. Personally, I can find something to fear on a daily basis. And back in the day, that led me away from doing what was best for me and my career because it kept me from doing anything at all! Like the fear of sounding like I didn’t know what I was talking about keeping me from speaking up in meetings. Then being upset when someone else said what I was thinking of saying and getting all the praise. Or the fear of being rejected keeping me from even applying for the role. Then kicking myself when I saw who was selected. Or the fear of looking foolish which kept me from joining in on the fun. Make Fear Your Friend What counts is what you do with that fear because that’s where you have an opportunity to improve your life. During my recent trip to Peru, I was reminded of how to make fear work for me rather than against me. One of the people we met, Fernando, lives an adventurous life traveling the world and doing extreme sports and lots of things that I would be afraid to do. I asked him whether he ever experienced fear and if so, what he did to overcome it. Fernando said, “Fear is your friend. If it’s your enemy, you’ll lose all the time.” “Fear is your friend. If it’s your enemy, you’ll lose all the time.” What a simple and freeing way to approach fear. If you treat fear as an enemy, you’ll keep a watchful eye on it, fight it and work hard to avoid it. By focusing on your fear and thinking about it all the time, it allows fear to take on epic proportions. Exactly the opposite of what you want to happen. In essence, you lose. But by embracing fear as your friend, you can treat it as you would a friend. Invite them in, greet them, listen to what they have to say, and thank them for trying to help you. Then you’re free to make your own choice of what to do. Do not fear failure but rather fear not trying. Roy T. Bennett, The Light in the Heart What Will You Do? When your fear is warning you of dangers that don’t exist, like treating speaking at a meeting the same way as a life-or-death situation, remember to embrace fear as your friend. Observe what it’s trying to tell you. See what you can learn from it. Appreciate it for trying to help you. Then make a conscious choice to take actions that lead to your bigger future. Make a conscious choice to take actions that lead to your bigger future. So, what do you fear and how would it make your life better if you embrace that fear as your friend? Leave me a comment and let me know.

9 things youre doing wrong at work -

9 things youre doing wrong at work - It can be overwhelming keeping up with day-to-day responsibilities â€" at work and at home. Sometimes, it seems like everyone wants a little piece of you, and its easy to forget your priorities, plans and targets. Could you be doing these things wrong at work? If you want to stay on track and give yourself the best shot at being as successful as possible, avoid the following habits: Do not worry about things you cannot control. The economy, your nasty boss, the weather â€" you cant change them, so dont spend your time focusing on them. Instead, choose things you can control and focus on how to make changes to improve yourself. At the same time, dont be too quick to label what things are beyond your control. For example, even though the economy isnt strong, you can influence how likely it is for you to land a new job if you are proactive about networking and create strong job search marketing materials. Do not obsess about what otherwise insignificant people think about you. While this negative habit may be most obvious and prevalent in young people, many of whom spend endless hours worrying about what others think about them, peer pressure does not end at high school graduation. If you find yourself concerned about what other people may say about your choices, your appearance or your habits, youll save yourself a lot of time and aggravation by focusing on only the people you need to please. In most cases, that includes yourself, your boss and your family or close friends. Do not procrastinate. Another habit that affects you both at work and in your personal life, procrastinating can only hurt you in both places. When you avoid an important project or conversation, it takes up emotional energy you could be using to make positive changes in your life. Dont think that your boss wont notice if you cant get a project started or if you always wait until the last minute to finish something. No matter how difficult a project or challenge seems, youll be better off taking care of it step-by-step instead of putting it off for another day. Dont be careless. You may be surprised by how even small careless mistakes can affect your professional reputation. If you consistently make spelling or grammar errors, for example, you may lose respect and potentially opportunities to advance at work. When you are disorganized and let things slip through the cracks at work, you will earn a reputation for being someone who cant get things done, so pay attention to even the smallest details. Do not fall down an Internet rabbit hole. Its easy to get distracted and realize youve just spent two hours reading banal status updates on Facebook instead of getting your work done. Be disciplined about your time. Have a goal in mind when you get online and be single-minded about achieving it. Some days, your goal will be to catch up with friends or share your vacation photos. However, if you know you need to accomplish something specific, such as researching a particular topic or subject, dont veer off task, or youll never finish. Do not badmouth people. No doubt, gossiping with like-minded people can be a quick way to bond, both in and outside of work. However, when youre always looking for the latest dirt to share, youre likely souring your own reputation, and it can be very difficult to recover it. Dont hold grudges. Youve heard this advice before; holding a grudge hurts you more than it affects the person youre trying to punish. Be the bigger person and move on; youll be glad you did. Dont complain constantly. Every office has a whiner â€" the person you can count on to complain, no matter what changes come down the pike. Take a close look at yourself and make sure that person isnt you. If you must gripe and moan, consider relying on a pet as your audience. No matter what you do, avoid sharing your every frustration via social media. When you subject friends to all of your unhappy rants, it may make them hesitate to make an introduction or to help you network when youre looking for a new job or growing a business. Do not obsess about the past. If youre constantly looking in the rear view mirror you and focusing on past history, youll miss opportunities just ahead. Instead of worrying about how you could have done things differently, make a pact with yourself to create positive changes. Of course, it isnt always as easy as simply deciding to make a change, but your attitude controls your actions. One step at a time, begin to focus on what changes you want to see in your future and youll be that much closer to accomplishing them.
