How Apprenticeship Employers Can Unlock the Potential of TikTok

How Apprenticeship Employers Can Unlock the Potential of TikTok TikTok has taken the social media world by storm. With Generation Z embracing the short-form video-sharing app in their millions, what does this mean for employers needing to reach teenagers? We used National Apprenticeship Week to investigate. TikTok: The new kid on the block It was the world’s second most downloaded app in 2019, second only to WhatsApp. It regularly topped the monthly app download charts with the video app achieving 1.5 billion downloads by the end of 2019. And 69% of TikTok’s users are between the age of 16 and 24: the all-important Generation Z. Why is it so popular? It’s a place of expression through the camera on your phone and some easy to use editing tools. And whatever the size of your following, you can reach hundreds, thousands, and even millions of people. The TikTok algorithm levels the playing field. What are consumer brands doing on TikTok? Consumer brands have a vested interest in reaching Generation Z. Their bottom lines depend on it. From the music and movie industries to celebrities and politicians, TikTok has opened up opportunities to drive explosive results and reach a highly valuable age group. Adobe has been doing a good job engaging users through their #MakeTheLeap challenge. With the help of influencers, they challenged people to show how they would make a leap in their life. This works well because it has strong messaging, it’s aspirational, it’s relatable, and it’s easy to join in. #MakeTheLeap has clocked up over 92 million views at the time of writing, which is great for Adobe’s brand awareness. It’s still early days for brands on TikTok but they are definitely seizing the opportunity to reach millions of people in a new way. What did we find on TikTok during National Apprenticeship Week? At Fanbytes, we work with brands to help them win the hearts of Gen Z on TikTok. That’s why we built our very own insights tool called Bytesights, the world’s first TikTok influencer discovery platform. We used National Apprenticeship Week to take a look at apprenticeship content. Hashtags are a big part of discovery on TikTok, so we took a look at #Apprenticeship and #NationalApprenticeshipWeek. The #Apprenticeship hashtag has 79 posts with around 40.9k views. However, there was a very low engagement with little to no likes or comments on most posts. Users are intrigued which is a great start but there’s room for active engagement. There wasn’t much happening with the #NationalApprenticeshipWeek hashtag with only 6 posts and 29.9k views. What was interesting, however, was that engagement was a lot higher with an average of 281 likes and 6 comments per post. This shows great potential. It was interesting to see how these hashtags performed during the week. There was clear interest in the topic as we saw an 18,980% increase in views on #NationalApprenticeshipWeek. Users became more engaged with the content as the week went on. People are willing to share apprenticeship life on TikTok but employers are yet to take advantage of its massive potential. Who has taken the leap into TikTok? ACCA. We worked with the Association of Chartered Certified Accounts to help them raise the profile of accountancy amongst Gen Z. TikTok offers something for everyone: the artist aspiring to turn into an overnight sensation, or an employer looking to strike a cord with Gen Z. TikTok has access to communities that are just waiting to be unlocked by employer marketers. Like a genie in a bottle, brands who become witness to its magic now will discover a whole new world. How can you get started on TikTok? Don’t worry, you don’t have to get your employees to start lip-syncing and dancing to music unless you want to. Here’s how you can get started: Download the app and spend your commute, sofa time or coffee breaks just consuming TikTok. The chances are you’ll have some ideas about how your organization could get involved. Tap on the search icon to see what’s trending on TikTok and think about how you can get involved in the relevant ones. Get your employees involved. Pick a handful of apprentices and ask what they could do for you. Partner with an influencer as they will happily get involved if the opportunity is right for them. They know the platform and have the following. Create a challenge and see you reach potentially thousands on TikTok. It’s early days but we know there’s great potential in TikTok for organizations needing to recruit on to their apprenticeship programs. We expect the platform to increase in popularity and be primed for more apprenticeship content come National Apprenticeship Week 2021. Reach Larger Audiences with Succinct and Thoughtful Communication - Personal Branding Blog - Stand Out In Your Career

Reach Larger Audiences with Succinct and Thoughtful Communication - Personal Branding Blog - Stand Out In Your Career Geometry tells us that a diagonal is the shortest path. Likewise, succinct communication with the end goal in mind is the shortest route for accomplishment. However, with communication it is necessary to be aware of balancing directness with diplomacy. Providing and Accepting Feedback Stomachs sometimes turn upon hearing very negative feedback. However, it is these times, when bracing yourself and paying attention to every detail, that will work to your benefit. While it may feel as if you are being stabbed in the back, the angrier you become usually implies there is an element of truth behind the commentary. Negative feedback may provide two important lessons: First, after you have calmed down, take time to examine all aspects of what was stated. Doing so sometimes provides the opportunity to recognize those elements of truth and realize incredible future results. Second, before you launch into advising what someone else “should do”, be certain you frame the comment in a thoughtful manner with the intent to truly help the other person. In this regard, your input will be appreciated. Example: Instead of berating a woman for her unprofessional photo, a complement was first paid to gain attention. She was told that she looks so much nicer in person than her online photo displays that she should consider having a professional headshot taken. The woman instantly recognized the complement, and appreciated the sage advice. She immediately made an appointment with a studio to have her photo taken. Rejection Is Sometimes A Good Thing Disappointment may sometimes be yours when turned down on a project. The reasoning seems illogical. Soon the thought of quitting may enter your mind as you begin to wonder if continuing is worth the effort. But just as with the negative feedback, ideas of new and better possibilities come to mind when you are willing to weigh in on the facts. Examples from an improved mindset: 1. Many times it turns out that the rejection was in fact a good turn of events as you land in a far better place. 2. Use examples of your story to motivate those you help because sooner or later most people face the same. Buyer versus Seller When it comes to the transaction of buying and selling there are two very distinct perceptions at hand. The idea of providing and receiving service with value included, are at the heart of making the sale. Examples: 1. As the buyer, confirm everything you expect from the purchase and details of what will happen should it not live up to what you were told. 2. Remind the buyer of all the good (value) that will come from the purchase, and that you will be there to guarantee the agreed upon expectations Reconnecting with Diplomacy A great way to reconnect with past prospects and clients, without seeming out of line is to say, “I was thinking of you”. Most everyone appreciates being thought of and then become more inclined to listen carefully. This is due to the belief you might be on to something special. Diplomacy builds the relationship. Operating in this manner with your clients and peers will positively distinguish your personal brand and lead you to the Smooth Sale!

Race Against the Machine

Race Against the Machine Technology is changing at such a rapid pace that some economists have predicted the “end of employment.” Computers are able to do many of the functions that humans used to perform, from security and crime fighting to journalism. (Many of the routine game summaries you read in the sports section are actually written by software called Narrative Science.) Technology is more reliable, more efficient and more accurate than any human, and after RD costs have been recouped, more cost effective as well. Is there any way to win the Race against the Machine? Embed from Getty Imageswindow.gie=window.gie||function(c){(gie.q=gie.q||[]).push(c)};gie(function(){gie.widgets.load({id:'QpjarqYmSjdTFV4omWFrsw',sig:'TAtVx1CwKQbZ3Y2Rzu7BYahpWatfcx7T1GoE_VYmrw4=',w:'507px',h:'338px',items:'152885764',caption: false ,tld:'com',is360: false })}); A 2012 paper by MIT Center for Digital Business researchers Erik Brynjolfsson and Andrew McAfee says that the stagnation of income and employment opportunities in the middle class is because “our skills and institutions have not kept up with the rapid changes in technology.” In previous technology revolutions, like those of the 19th and early 20th century, “millions of people left agriculture, but an even larger number found employment in manufacturing and services.” But the computer revolution is different; it’s moving faster and affecting almost every industry sector. “General purpose computers are directly relevant not only to the 60% of the labor force involved in information processing tasks but also to more and more of the remaining 40%.” When an entrepreneur built a factory in the 19th century, he created hundreds, perhaps thousands of jobs. The power of processing means that the new companies and products created today may need just a small group of people to reach markets all over the world. The number of jobs needed in the information economy is shrinking and dividing sharply.  Creators with digital expertise are thriving. Low end service jobs are also growing as creators need people to mow lawns, clean houses, and wait on tables. But the middle is disappearing rapidly. Brynjolfsson and McAfee say that we can reverse this trend if we shift our thinking. The key to winning the race, they write, is “not to compete against machines but to compete with machines.” Unlike natural resources, they argue, information resources â€" ideas â€" are not depleted with use; they actually multiply. They can be reused, re-purposed and reinvented, creating new iterations of products and services. They’re also available to anyone, anywhere, anytime via the internet. The authors write that we must improve our education system, focusing on creativity, leadership and communications skills and layering in competency-based certifications. In other words, we need to amplify the qualities that make us human and master the technology that will help us work alongside computers and robots. I foresee a day when we will all learn programming alongside reading, writing and math. When we encounter a problem that needs solving, we’ll write our own program. If it turns out to work, we’ll offer it for sale to others who have the same need. I agree with Brynjolfsson and McAfee when they say that we must take technology seriously as part of the slow recovery from the recent recession. “The root of our problems is not that we’re in a Great Recession, or a Great Stagnation, but rather that we are in the early throes of a Great Restructuring.” Financial crises force companies to innovate and cut costs wherever they can; today, that usually mean replacing human labor with technology. Even low wage workers are not immune to this sea change in employment. Taiwan’s Foxconn, the electronics company that produces Apple products and other technology, announced recently that it will purchase a million robots to replace much of its workforce in routine tasks like painting and assembly. In his book  A Farewell to Alms, economist Gregory Clark writes about a “worker” whose many jobs included agriculture, transportation and transporting troops into battle. The internal combustion engine replace him in every one of these functions. “There was always a wage at which all these horses could have remained employed. But that wage was so low that it did not pay for their feed.” We need to make sure that our next generation of workers do not become the horses of the 21st century.

How to Overcome Fear and Live a Rich Life

How to Overcome Fear and Live a Rich Life There’s an emotion that will hold you back from having the life you aspire to if you let it. It can prevent you from living a rich life filled with marvelous experiences, relationships and opportunities that bring you joy and help you become your best self. That emotion is fear. It’s normal to feel fear, especially when you’re about to do something new or put yourself out there in front of an audience. That’s just your brain protecting you from “bad things” happening, whether that’s failing or making a fool of yourself. When You Let Fear Stop You The easy way out is to give in to fear and stay in your comfort zone. But that keeps you from branching out, venturing forward and doing something new or different that leads to growing into your better self. And if you don’t move past your fear, it’ll hold you back and you’ll resent the fact that you’ve given into your fear. Personally, I can find something to fear on a daily basis. And back in the day, that led me away from doing what was best for me and my career because it kept me from doing anything at all! Like the fear of sounding like I didn’t know what I was talking about keeping me from speaking up in meetings. Then being upset when someone else said what I was thinking of saying and getting all the praise. Or the fear of being rejected keeping me from even applying for the role. Then kicking myself when I saw who was selected. Or the fear of looking foolish which kept me from joining in on the fun. Make Fear Your Friend What counts is what you do with that fear because that’s where you have an opportunity to improve your life. During my recent trip to Peru, I was reminded of how to make fear work for me rather than against me. One of the people we met, Fernando, lives an adventurous life traveling the world and doing extreme sports and lots of things that I would be afraid to do. I asked him whether he ever experienced fear and if so, what he did to overcome it. Fernando said, “Fear is your friend. If it’s your enemy, you’ll lose all the time.” “Fear is your friend. If it’s your enemy, you’ll lose all the time.” What a simple and freeing way to approach fear. If you treat fear as an enemy, you’ll keep a watchful eye on it, fight it and work hard to avoid it. By focusing on your fear and thinking about it all the time, it allows fear to take on epic proportions. Exactly the opposite of what you want to happen. In essence, you lose. But by embracing fear as your friend, you can treat it as you would a friend. Invite them in, greet them, listen to what they have to say, and thank them for trying to help you. Then you’re free to make your own choice of what to do. Do not fear failure but rather fear not trying. Roy T. Bennett, The Light in the Heart What Will You Do? When your fear is warning you of dangers that don’t exist, like treating speaking at a meeting the same way as a life-or-death situation, remember to embrace fear as your friend. Observe what it’s trying to tell you. See what you can learn from it. Appreciate it for trying to help you. Then make a conscious choice to take actions that lead to your bigger future. Make a conscious choice to take actions that lead to your bigger future. So, what do you fear and how would it make your life better if you embrace that fear as your friend? Leave me a comment and let me know.

9 things youre doing wrong at work -

9 things youre doing wrong at work - It can be overwhelming keeping up with day-to-day responsibilities â€" at work and at home. Sometimes, it seems like everyone wants a little piece of you, and its easy to forget your priorities, plans and targets. Could you be doing these things wrong at work? If you want to stay on track and give yourself the best shot at being as successful as possible, avoid the following habits: Do not worry about things you cannot control. The economy, your nasty boss, the weather â€" you cant change them, so dont spend your time focusing on them. Instead, choose things you can control and focus on how to make changes to improve yourself. At the same time, dont be too quick to label what things are beyond your control. For example, even though the economy isnt strong, you can influence how likely it is for you to land a new job if you are proactive about networking and create strong job search marketing materials. Do not obsess about what otherwise insignificant people think about you. While this negative habit may be most obvious and prevalent in young people, many of whom spend endless hours worrying about what others think about them, peer pressure does not end at high school graduation. If you find yourself concerned about what other people may say about your choices, your appearance or your habits, youll save yourself a lot of time and aggravation by focusing on only the people you need to please. In most cases, that includes yourself, your boss and your family or close friends. Do not procrastinate. Another habit that affects you both at work and in your personal life, procrastinating can only hurt you in both places. When you avoid an important project or conversation, it takes up emotional energy you could be using to make positive changes in your life. Dont think that your boss wont notice if you cant get a project started or if you always wait until the last minute to finish something. No matter how difficult a project or challenge seems, youll be better off taking care of it step-by-step instead of putting it off for another day. Dont be careless. You may be surprised by how even small careless mistakes can affect your professional reputation. If you consistently make spelling or grammar errors, for example, you may lose respect and potentially opportunities to advance at work. When you are disorganized and let things slip through the cracks at work, you will earn a reputation for being someone who cant get things done, so pay attention to even the smallest details. Do not fall down an Internet rabbit hole. Its easy to get distracted and realize youve just spent two hours reading banal status updates on Facebook instead of getting your work done. Be disciplined about your time. Have a goal in mind when you get online and be single-minded about achieving it. Some days, your goal will be to catch up with friends or share your vacation photos. However, if you know you need to accomplish something specific, such as researching a particular topic or subject, dont veer off task, or youll never finish. Do not badmouth people. No doubt, gossiping with like-minded people can be a quick way to bond, both in and outside of work. However, when youre always looking for the latest dirt to share, youre likely souring your own reputation, and it can be very difficult to recover it. Dont hold grudges. Youve heard this advice before; holding a grudge hurts you more than it affects the person youre trying to punish. Be the bigger person and move on; youll be glad you did. Dont complain constantly. Every office has a whiner â€" the person you can count on to complain, no matter what changes come down the pike. Take a close look at yourself and make sure that person isnt you. If you must gripe and moan, consider relying on a pet as your audience. No matter what you do, avoid sharing your every frustration via social media. When you subject friends to all of your unhappy rants, it may make them hesitate to make an introduction or to help you network when youre looking for a new job or growing a business. Do not obsess about the past. If youre constantly looking in the rear view mirror you and focusing on past history, youll miss opportunities just ahead. Instead of worrying about how you could have done things differently, make a pact with yourself to create positive changes. Of course, it isnt always as easy as simply deciding to make a change, but your attitude controls your actions. One step at a time, begin to focus on what changes you want to see in your future and youll be that much closer to accomplishing them.
