How to Overcome Fear and Live a Rich Life
How to Overcome Fear and Live a Rich Life Thereâs an emotion that will hold you back from having the life you aspire to if you let it. It can prevent you from living a rich life filled with marvelous experiences, relationships and opportunities that bring you joy and help you become your best self. That emotion is fear. Itâs normal to feel fear, especially when youâre about to do something new or put yourself out there in front of an audience. Thatâs just your brain protecting you from âbad thingsâ happening, whether thatâs failing or making a fool of yourself. When You Let Fear Stop You The easy way out is to give in to fear and stay in your comfort zone. But that keeps you from branching out, venturing forward and doing something new or different that leads to growing into your better self. And if you donât move past your fear, itâll hold you back and youâll resent the fact that youâve given into your fear. Personally, I can find something to fear on a daily basis. And back in the day, that led me away from doing what was best for me and my career because it kept me from doing anything at all! Like the fear of sounding like I didnât know what I was talking about keeping me from speaking up in meetings. Then being upset when someone else said what I was thinking of saying and getting all the praise. Or the fear of being rejected keeping me from even applying for the role. Then kicking myself when I saw who was selected. Or the fear of looking foolish which kept me from joining in on the fun. Make Fear Your Friend What counts is what you do with that fear because thatâs where you have an opportunity to improve your life. During my recent trip to Peru, I was reminded of how to make fear work for me rather than against me. One of the people we met, Fernando, lives an adventurous life traveling the world and doing extreme sports and lots of things that I would be afraid to do. I asked him whether he ever experienced fear and if so, what he did to overcome it. Fernando said, âFear is your friend. If itâs your enemy, youâll lose all the time.â âFear is your friend. If itâs your enemy, youâll lose all the time.â What a simple and freeing way to approach fear. If you treat fear as an enemy, youâll keep a watchful eye on it, fight it and work hard to avoid it. By focusing on your fear and thinking about it all the time, it allows fear to take on epic proportions. Exactly the opposite of what you want to happen. In essence, you lose. But by embracing fear as your friend, you can treat it as you would a friend. Invite them in, greet them, listen to what they have to say, and thank them for trying to help you. Then youâre free to make your own choice of what to do. Do not fear failure but rather fear not trying. Roy T. Bennett, The Light in the Heart What Will You Do? When your fear is warning you of dangers that donât exist, like treating speaking at a meeting the same way as a life-or-death situation, remember to embrace fear as your friend. Observe what itâs trying to tell you. See what you can learn from it. Appreciate it for trying to help you. Then make a conscious choice to take actions that lead to your bigger future. Make a conscious choice to take actions that lead to your bigger future. So, what do you fear and how would it make your life better if you embrace that fear as your friend? Leave me a comment and let me know.

9 things youre doing wrong at work -
9 things youre doing wrong at work - It can be overwhelming keeping up with day-to-day responsibilities â" at work and at home. Sometimes, it seems like everyone wants a little piece of you, and its easy to forget your priorities, plans and targets. Could you be doing these things wrong at work? If you want to stay on track and give yourself the best shot at being as successful as possible, avoid the following habits: Do not worry about things you cannot control. The economy, your nasty boss, the weather â" you cant change them, so dont spend your time focusing on them. Instead, choose things you can control and focus on how to make changes to improve yourself. At the same time, dont be too quick to label what things are beyond your control. For example, even though the economy isnt strong, you can influence how likely it is for you to land a new job if you are proactive about networking and create strong job search marketing materials. Do not obsess about what otherwise insignificant people think about you. While this negative habit may be most obvious and prevalent in young people, many of whom spend endless hours worrying about what others think about them, peer pressure does not end at high school graduation. If you find yourself concerned about what other people may say about your choices, your appearance or your habits, youll save yourself a lot of time and aggravation by focusing on only the people you need to please. In most cases, that includes yourself, your boss and your family or close friends. Do not procrastinate. Another habit that affects you both at work and in your personal life, procrastinating can only hurt you in both places. When you avoid an important project or conversation, it takes up emotional energy you could be using to make positive changes in your life. Dont think that your boss wont notice if you cant get a project started or if you always wait until the last minute to finish something. No matter how difficult a project or challenge seems, youll be better off taking care of it step-by-step instead of putting it off for another day. Dont be careless. You may be surprised by how even small careless mistakes can affect your professional reputation. If you consistently make spelling or grammar errors, for example, you may lose respect and potentially opportunities to advance at work. When you are disorganized and let things slip through the cracks at work, you will earn a reputation for being someone who cant get things done, so pay attention to even the smallest details. Do not fall down an Internet rabbit hole. Its easy to get distracted and realize youve just spent two hours reading banal status updates on Facebook instead of getting your work done. Be disciplined about your time. Have a goal in mind when you get online and be single-minded about achieving it. Some days, your goal will be to catch up with friends or share your vacation photos. However, if you know you need to accomplish something specific, such as researching a particular topic or subject, dont veer off task, or youll never finish. Do not badmouth people. No doubt, gossiping with like-minded people can be a quick way to bond, both in and outside of work. However, when youre always looking for the latest dirt to share, youre likely souring your own reputation, and it can be very difficult to recover it. Dont hold grudges. Youve heard this advice before; holding a grudge hurts you more than it affects the person youre trying to punish. Be the bigger person and move on; youll be glad you did. Dont complain constantly. Every office has a whiner â" the person you can count on to complain, no matter what changes come down the pike. Take a close look at yourself and make sure that person isnt you. If you must gripe and moan, consider relying on a pet as your audience. No matter what you do, avoid sharing your every frustration via social media. When you subject friends to all of your unhappy rants, it may make them hesitate to make an introduction or to help you network when youre looking for a new job or growing a business. Do not obsess about the past. If youre constantly looking in the rear view mirror you and focusing on past history, youll miss opportunities just ahead. Instead of worrying about how you could have done things differently, make a pact with yourself to create positive changes. Of course, it isnt always as easy as simply deciding to make a change, but your attitude controls your actions. One step at a time, begin to focus on what changes you want to see in your future and youll be that much closer to accomplishing them. Best Font Size For Resume - Which Size Is Right For You?
Best Font Size For Resume - Which Size Is Right For You?The best font size for resume is a question that gets asked a lot, but there is no single answer. The only rule is that you need to find the size that fits your requirements best. You can't always have the same font size as your colleagues, but you should try to have something that is easy on the eyes and is appropriate with the theme of your CV.When it comes to font size for resume, it is a personal decision that has to be taken by each individual. But if you are interested in choosing the right font size for resume, here are some things to consider. All you need to do is check these factors to find the best font size for resume. The font size for resume is not just about choosing the right font, but it also plays a role in the overall design of your resume. So, make sure that you choose the best typeface, but make sure that you also keep in mind the importance of making the design of your resume easy on the eyes. A good way to do this is to start with one set of fonts and then change it to another. Keep this in mind as you work through the selection process of fonts for your resume. You will notice that the size of a font actually depends on the placement. A large font size will create a larger image on the page. Conversely, you will notice that a small font size will make your resume look smaller. You should make sure that you stick to the size that fits you best. If you find that you do not fit into any particular font size, then try out other options until you find the one that you like the most.To make your choice easier, remember that your text is the most important part of your resume. This means that you will need to go with a font size that is right for the text. The size of your font is not a choice that you can just flip a switch. If you find that the size of your font is not fitting the content of your resume, then it is probably time to get professional help. When you have a professional help on your side, then you will have a better chance of creating a perfect resume. Remember that it is your personal career and you are the person who is trying to land the job that you have always wanted. You may not want to spend all the money in trying to have professional help. But you can at least choose the best font size for resume that you feel best suits you.Remember that this is a matter of personal preference and it is up to you to decide what size fits you best. However, you should always make sure that your choice of font size for resume fits in with the overall design of your resume. You may have several different options to choose from, but you can always use your best judgment to choose the best one for you. Remember that you should never feel that the size of the font has anything to do with the actual content of your resume.

Back to the Roots How This Mushroom Startup Cultivates Success
Back to the Roots How This Mushroom Startup Cultivates Success Nikhil Arora and Alejandro Velez are co-founders of Back to the Roots, an Oakland, Calif.-based startup whose flagship products include a Mushroom Farm, a kit for growing oyster mushrooms, and the Water Garden, an aquaponic fish tank for growing vegetables and herbs. The business started in 2009 as a dorm-room project for Arora and Velez at UC Berkeley, where the two began growing mushrooms from used coffee grounds. Following encouragement from Alice Waters (of Chez Panisse fame) and a grant from Berkeley, they turned their project into a real business, launching with a family-friendly do-it-yourself mushroom kit. Since then, theyâve made both the Forbes and Inc. â30 Under 30â lists; won multiple awards for design and innovation; launched multiple new products (including organic cereals and breakfast toppers and a Garden-in-a-Can kit for growing herbs); and have products in stores nationwide, including Home Depot, Nordstrom, and Urban Outfitters. Revenue was $4.6 million in 2014, and they recently raised $2 million in seed funding. Investors in the round, which was led by Fund Good Jobs, include the president of Annieâs Inc., the CEOs of Clif Bar and Jamba Juice, and TOMS Shoesâ Blake Mycoskieâ"a clear vote of confidence in Back to the Rootsâ mission to reinvent the food industry. Below, Arora and Velez share some of their best advice for starting and growing a product-based company. Whatâs the best piece of advice you ever received and why? One of our mentors told us, âThe key to success is simpleâ"good health and good partnerships.â We both swear by that. No. 1 is health â"without that, nothing else matters; you cannot lead effectively, and you cannot make good decisions. Read Next: How to Never Work a Day in Your Life Good partnerships is No. 2. They say it takes a village to raise a child, and thatâs true for a company too. You canât do it in a silo. Weâve learned that we have to find people who are better than us at certain things, and rather than re-creating something, partner with them. For instance, we ended up moving our mushroom farming production â" which for two years was our baby and our companyâs entire existence â" to another farm, run by the first guys who started growing shiitake mushrooms in North America. As a result, our quality, ability to scale and yield now are infinitely better than before. Partners are also who you work with each day â" for us, thatâs each other and our team. What was your biggest mistake to date, and what did it teach you? Not investing in our products enough early on was our biggest mistake. At first, our first mushroom kit was a big, basketball-sized, clear bag of fungus with a label on it from FedEx. Weâve since learned that you can be scrappy everywhere else in a company, but not with your products. Thatâs all you have; thatâs the foundation you stand on each day. In a product-based business, we spend all this time demoing, making sales, marketing and traveling to get people to try the product, and all of that goes to waste if the product quality isnât top notch. Now, product development and product design is a cornerstone focus of the company. What one piece of advice would you pass on to aspiring entrepreneurs? Make sure youâre having fun. This has to be something you truly wake up looking forward to tackle each day. We feel blessed that weâre still having as much fun as we did on day 1. Read Next: This Habit Will Make You a Better Leader The power of storytelling and enjoying the small wins is crucial for achieving this. In the chase of the âdream,â sometimes itâs easy to overlook the small wins, but thatâs what keeps you happy. That one happy customer phone call, slight increase in sell-through, or packaging taking one less iteration to finalize that you thought, etc. â" thatâs where the happiness comes from, because the âdreamâ keeps on moving further out. Whenever days are tough, telling stories of past funny times or even hard times reminds you how far youâve actually come. Bring along a friend and stop off for lunch afterward in town and youll be feeling refreshed in no time.3. Hit the SpaIt doesnt take a long time at a spa to feel like youre in a different world hitting the spa is quite the self-care strategy. It can be if you get creative. While its obviously easier to kill time with a longer itinerary somewhere completely new, doing so closer to home can be more challenging. Often, for longer staycations, the idea is more important than the location. Staying at home doesnt have to mean doing the same old thing. Commit to a home-improvement project, camp nearby for an extended period, or even volunteer to do something in a new place every day in order to bring some of that holiday feeling to your longer staycations.26. Rent an RV and Take a Road TripJust because its called a staycation doesnt mean you literally have to stay put. You also dont have to go on months-long, cross-country trip in order to make good use of an RV.
